What Do All Those Different Display Type Acronyms Actually Mean?

I am sure that if you visited this site a few times you have seen some of the videos or read the articles on various mobile products. Usually you will be inundated with a slew of acronyms such as TN, IPS, OLED, AMOLED and perhaps even IGZO.

Well today I am going to explain what those letters mean and what the basic differences are. We are not going into the science here, so please just keep reading, so you don’t feel so confused the next time a tablet/notebook reviewer drones on about a TN or IPS display.

We have several basic technologies for displays and the primary 2 are LCD and OLED. LCD is by far the most common and comes in all sorts of flavors such as TN and IPS. You might even hear the term TFT-LCD.

So let’s break those down:

  • LCD = Liquid Crystal Display, not new, been around since we all got digital watches or a cheap calculator.
  • TFT-LCD = Thin Film Transistor LCD, pretty much the same as LCD.
  • OLED = Organic Light Emitting Diode. A relatively new technology that also includes AMOLED, which is Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode. Super AMOLED is simply Samsung’s marketing telling you their phones have a “super” display. OLED displays use less power and improve battery life.
  • TN = Twisted Nematic which is simply a type of technology that is less expensive than IPS and offers very high refresh rates at the expense of viewing angles.
  • IPS = In Plane Switching which offers excellent viewing angles, better color reproduction but at a higher cost. This type display will not have the higher refresh rates of a TN display.
  • IGZO= Lastly you might hear about IGZO displays. These incorporate a transparent oxide semiconductor comprised of Indium, Gallium, Zinc, and Oxygen. This is a technology that can be applied to the panel types listed above to reduce power consumption down to 1/5th to even 1/10th and save battery life. This is an interesting technology and you can get the tech info here.

So that sort of covers all the basics. You can easily do a search on Google to find all the technical details, but the whole idea of this post was simply to let you know what all that jargon means.

Incidentally the best display I have on any of my devices is my AMOLED screen BLU Studio Energy 2 phone. It isn’t the highest resolution, but it looks a damned sight better than anything I own at any possible viewing angle! Even outdoors in the sun it still looks stunning, all while saving battery!

That is all for today,

Tim

Tonight We Have Another Video Worth Sharing: Jumper EzBook 3 Plus Unboxing And Hands On

This video covers the EZBook 3 Plus, which is actually a slight upgrade from the EzBook 3 Pro in that it has the Intel Core M3 processor instead of the Apollo Lake N3450.

This one comes to us from Chris over at TechTablets, so make sure to subscribe or visit his site!

The short list of specs are as follows:

  • Intel Core M3 7Y30  processor
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 128 GB SSD (Upgrade slot on bottom of notebook)
  • WiFi b/g/n/ac dual band
  • microSD slot
  • 2 full size USB 3 .0 ports
  • 1920 x 1080 display

The display appears to be the weak point on this device, but considering the price it may still be well worth the money!

So let us get to the video…

This device is available on Gearbest currently at $424.99.

That is all I have for now,

Tim

I Was Looking For Some Updates on The Chuwi LapBook Air Today And Ran Into Some Great Prices!

While checking the Chuwi web site today I ran across some great sale prices on Chuwi Products from Banggood. Chuwi had some sale prices listed and it turns out that a few of them are even lower when you get to the Banggood site.

Remember, this are limited time sales and you need to hop on them right away if you are interested! All links below will open in a new tab.

So let us get right to those deals!

The first is the Chuwi LapBook 12.3 at a mere $269. This little notebook has great specs and at only $284 it is a deal! (sale ends at 9 PM CDT,09-09-17)

Next we have the Chuwi Hi12 tablet at a mere $206.99. This is another great deal!

Next we have the Chuwi Hi13, 13.5 inch tablet at a great price of only $289.99.

Last we have the Chuwi LapBook 14.1 at a very low $218.99!

In the interest of getting this info out quickly I didn’t post any specs, because you can find all those at the links I posted and by doing a search on this site since every one of these devices has been written about here or has a video review posted.

For the curious I did not find any new updated specs on the LapBook Air.

So Many To Consider And This Is Creating a Conundrum! We Are Talking Notebooks Here.

To start with, I have never put a laptop in my lap so the term notebook is far more logical and therefore I shall refer to all of the following products as notebooks! Now that brings us to the subject at hand and that would be which of these new incredible notebooks should I be really considering?

Yes, one of them is a 2 in 1, but is essentially a notebook. So you nit-picky folks out there can shut up right now! I have narrowed my current list down a bit, but there are all sorts of good reasons to buy one over the other.

Almost everything on my list currently happens to be a Chuwi product, because, well, they fit into the price range and offer the best bang for the buck. However the search is still proceeding and some of the players are to be named later. The other device is a Jumper product.

Things that do not concern me as far as notebooks go:

  • I don’t give a damn how well it plays games
  • I really do not care about stylus support
  • As long as it is less than 50 lbs I can tote it easily
  • Thin is nifty, but not at the expense of battery/ports
  • Touch screen is okay, but not a requirement
  • I hate touch pads, so I do not care if they are crap

Things I do need:

  • Intel N3450 processor minimum
  • Full HD resolution minimum
  • 4-8 GB RAM
  • Onboard storage to be either 128 GB or have a slot for a SATA 3 SSD
  • No skimping on ports, (don’t be Apple)
  • Decent battery life. At least 6 hrs or so, 8 hrs+ is better
  • 12.3 – 14.1 inch screen

So all the above being said, here are the players, so far.

Chuwi LapBook 14.1

It has plenty of ports and a decent FHD screen and a super low price! You can pull the back off the unit and add an SSD and increase your storage and disk speed! At the current price of $239, it is a bargain! Check out the specs or watch the videos I have posted, it is a great machine.

Chuwi LapBook 12.3

This one has a super hi-res display and a little panel on the bottom to add your SSD. Very slick, all metal build and reasonably priced! This thing has a lot of advantages  along with the fantastic screen and can currently be fount for about $308!

Chuwi SurBook 2 in 1

This one is off my list based on the video I posted the other day! This one has a touch screen with the same super hi-res display as the LapBook 12.3 and can be purchased with either 64GB or 128 GB onboard storage and a microSD card slot. You can go to the Chuwi site to find this one. So far the best deal is grabbing one of the indiegogo deals at their site! For $439 you get the back-lit keyboard and stylus included.

Jumper EZBook 3 Pro

This is an all metal, thin and light notebook with a 13.3 inch screen and an easily upgradeable storage system via an M2 SSD drive. Add in 6 GB RAM and an Apollo Lake N3450 and we have a good device. The reviews are excellent, it has a good keyboard, a full HD 1920 x 1080 display and is currently on sale for only $230 on Gearbest. You can find the video review I posted on it right here.

Chuwi LapBook Air

We do not have all the specs on this one just yet, except it is supposed to be a full HD display, with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB SSD on board storage. This one is still just a like, not a draft pick.

That is all for this evening,

Tim

A Bit of News on The Chuwi LapBook Air And a Big Sale on BangGood

We have been waiting for news on the LapBook Air from Chuwi and today we got some specs! This sounds like a decent notebook for those in search of a larger 14.1 inch screen and lots of RAM and SSD storage!

The specs released at IFA 2017 were as follows:

  • Apollo Lake N3450 Processor
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 14.1 inch full HD display (no word on a touch panel)
  • Back-lit keyboard
  • Super thin 6 mm notebook

That is all we have for now,  but at least we see some light at the end of the tunnel. It will go on sale at the end of September.

Moving on, Banggood has some great prices on the other Chuwi models, including the Hi10, the Hi12 and the Hi13 tablets along with the LapBook 14.1 and several others, check this link for details.

The Surbook is also on sale at the link above, offering a 2 in 1 and a kickstand for $369.

That is all for now,

Tim
