A Bit Late This Week But Here is the Dragon Touch X10 Report…

Screenshot_2016-07-24-23-01-41
768mb ram total? 612 available?

So as usual the Dragon Touch X10 is working okay, but for the first time it is showing signs of age. I did have to reset it a few days back because the latest server software update was failing, but more importantly I noticed that the ram reported by the system was very low. Reseting it to factory defaults has not fixed the ram issue.

You can click on either image in this article to see what is being reported by the system and it certainly isn’t the 1gb it came with.  Depending on which app I use I see either 768mb installed or roughly 620mb installed.

Hmmm…619mb ram? Yeah, something has failed.

That makes me believe that somewhere 256mb ram or more has ceased to function. I have emailed customer service about the issue and now we shall see how well they honor the 1 year warranty on this device. Stay tuned for updates.

Sometimes “Old” Technology Can Be Great, Because When New Tech Goes to Hell-in-a-handcart It can be Frustrating

multitask_headerWeb Servers and Tablets can be a rather fickle combination. I run quite a few different websites here at HQ and of all the technology available to me here, the most reliable devices still tend to be PC based. Whether it be a notebook or a traditional desktop such as my old Dell Optiplex 745, these old school devices tend to chug right along and deliver the goods day after day without all that many crazy updates, bugs and crashes.

In the last 3 days I have had to completely reset both my Dragon Touch X10 Tablet and my Asus Z580CA Tablet back to factory defaults. The last time I reset my Asus notebook PC or my Dell PC was, uh, never.

Of course when running a server on either of those PC’s we are running in a Virtual Machine, which is the best way to go when running a web server! You can back up an entire VM in a few minutes and the base operating system is totally unaffected by what goes on inside the VM. It is also a lot more secure way to go and you don’t have to worry about battery life/WiFi going to sleep and all the issues that go  along with a battery powered tablet.

So in conclusion, I am still looking forward to purchasing and testing that Chuwi Hibook with Windows 10 and running this Tablet Test server inside of a wonderful VMware based VM on Linux.

A short addendum here: The Asus when reset brought back every single app and even my wallpaper and icons were in exactly the same place. Sure it took about 3 hrs, but I am impressed nonetheless.

Having some minor issues with My Asus and the KSweb App.

kswebSo the previous few days have been a server nightmare of sorts with the update on the Dragon Touch totally failing followed by the Asus having some issues of losing the files/hosts.

While all of those have been fixed I have still had to email the folks at KSLabs to see if I can download the previous version for my Asus because currently if I use ANY other web application, such as Chrome, the web server ceases to be active and needs restarting.

Hopefully these folks will get back to me soon, or come up with a bug fix for this issue. Tonight I have given the Dragon Touch and Asus a rest and am actually operating this site on the Asus X553SA notebook. Obviously that means I have to keep it plugged in or the battery will die as I sleep and I would hate to disappoint my 10’s of visitors.

Early Morning update: All seems a bit better after downloading a previous version that the developer provided!

Perhaps I didn’t Blow up the Dragon Touch Web Server the Other Day.

1-Server-Down
Occasionally app updates do not always work.

Tonight I was switching the tablet server here back onto my Asus Z580CA and guess what? Yeah, the server would not start up. So perhaps my previous article about a corrupt file was incorrect.

I had to completely reinstall the KSweb app onto my Asus after deleting all folders and directories. associated with KSweb. The reinstall took but a few minutes after dropping my custom index file into the correct folder, creating an empty database and then reinstalling WordPress and the Updraftplus plugin.

So my conclusion here is that the KSweb app either has a defective update file or possibly the latest version has some bugs.

Whatever the issue was I am looking forward to that Windows 10 dual-boot  tablet running a nice stable Linux/Apache server in a Virtual Machine (VM).

I Blew Up the Tablet Test Server Today! Oops!

Oops! Wrong Button!
Oops! Wrong Button!

Occasionally an update simply doesn’t work and this morning I ran the updates that needed updating from Google Play, one of which was the KSWeb app that this Dragon Touch X10 and the Asus Z580CA run on. I was immediately greeted with a KSweb has failed to start message on the DTX10. No such issues occurred on the Asus, but I was forced to do some thinking while at work.

So after I got home this evening I wiped the DTX10 back to factory defaults and everything installed and updated just fine. All I can figure out is that somehow the KSWeb app install directory had become corrupt.

However, no harm, no foul, because as you can see I simply started over and then pulled down the UpDraftPlus backup from the Asus and we are back up and running again on the DTX10. I highly recommend Updraftplus for anyone running WordPress!
