I Decided to Take the Asus Z580CA Out for a Spin Today.

The Asus in LogiTab mode

Folks who visit this site frequently may know that I am selling the Asus Z580CA tablet I own, but I decided to take it out today, on my day off and put it to good use.

This post is being written from my top-secret location, which just happens to have great food and really quick WiFi. The Asus of course is working just as one would expect from a 4gb ram tablet with a mouse and keyboard running via wireless/Bluetooth.

I am reaching a point where I am almost considerng not selling the damned thing, because it is so fast and does so many things so well.  I have lowered the price to well below what anyone would pay for a new one and as yet, not a single offer on this fine piece of technology.

However, it takes great pictures, never stutters, even playing games and it does make an admirable backup server. Sure, I would love to get that super cool Windows 10/Android dual-boot tablet this week, but I can wait a bit, since this particular tablet absolutely screams performance wise.

So let us go over those great specs one more time:

  • Intel Quad Core CPU at 2.3 Ghz
  • 64gb onboard storage
  • microSD slot with 128gb capability, (I am using a 64gb Samsung microSD card)
  • 4gb of ram
  • 2048 x 1536, 8 inch  IPS display
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • WiFi a/b/g/n/ac
  • Android 5.0 (yes, this needs an update to Android 6!)
  • average battery life about 6 hrs

The build quality of this device is great, it is super thin and it is relatively lightweight. I am still rather puzzled by the lack of interest, especially since I am am selling it at more than $100 off what Amazon is asking and I am throwing in a case and a USB C to standard USB adapter.

Those are my thoughts for today,

Tim

Just another video on the Asus Z580CA game/video performance. Today we are showing NOVA 3, whch is a rather large game and quite video intensive.

A Look Back at 2016 From a Mobile/Server Perspective…Or How We Ended Up With HiBook Labs!

So here at HiBook Labs we test tablets. Uh, we also run servers off of tablets and notebooks and anything else I can lay my hands on that is web server capable, and yes I have even run a web site off of a smartphone.

So the year started with the Dragon Touch X10 being the primary server for this site, which was yet to move to the tabletserver.com domain. That was really an eye opener for me as far as inexpensive tablets went. The DT X10 performed rather well as an Android based server and even better as a little notebook when running along with my K480 Logitech Bluetooth keyboard and a wireless mouse, of which I tried 2 and settled upon a Logitech, because it just plain worked.

Of course we also had the Asus X553SA,(this post is being written on the Asus notebook server), running part time as the web server also and it is still here and doing daily duty about 50% of the time as my work laptop.

Lastly we had the Asus Z580CA which was incredibly fast, super efficient and all I could want from a high-end tablet that beat the hell out of any Apple or Samsung product at twice the price. The downside to the Asus was their failure to update Android until roughly a month after I sold it. That of course set me to looking for a replacement for both the Asus and the Dragon Touch X10. The result ended up being the Chuwi HiBook 10.1 inch tablet, which I still have and intend to keep for a bit.

The HiBook is usually the server platform for this domain, hence the references to “HiBook Labs”. For what I paid for it, which was about $184 it has been the best tablet I have ever owned!

Of course I am looking at a 12 inch class replacement for the HiBook, but as usual I have yet to pull the trigger and decide on one and so for the immediate future we shall continue to see articles with the HiBook Labs image at the top.

At this time we are also running a Zotac ZBox Mini PC which is super fast, was dirt cheap and has replaced my primary PC, a Dell Optiplex 745.

Hopefully a few folks will click the ads I run here and buy a few products so that we can buy and test more cool stuff.

That being said, I can totally recommend a few products based on over a year of testing.

  • The Dragon Touch X10, 10.6 inch tablet
  • The Asus Z580CA, if you can find one
  • The Asus X553SA notebook
  • The Logitech K480 keyboard

That’s all for now,

Tim

The Newest Tablet Test Server Will Be…A Chuwi HiBook, 10.1 Inch Dual Boot!

Chuwi HiBook
Looking Forward to Win 10 with a VMware based Linux Server!

Within the previous 3 minutes I have successfully placed an order for a Chuwi HiBook from Amazon.com. Which of course means that I sold my Asus Z580CA tablet. I shall miss that little tablet, it was the fastest piece of hardware I have ever owned.

So be prepared for a new site with all the specs and tech on the Chuwi device. In the meantime this server will continue to run primarily on the Dragon Touch X10, which is working very well after I turned off all syncing and anything else that could cause the KSWeb app to crash.

I’ll post all the specs and a review once I have this critter in my hands. For now I am just relieved to having finally sold the Asus so I could proceed with testing on something new! Below you will find the basic specs:

  • Android 5.1 Lollipop/Windows 10 Home tablet
  • 1.44GHz (boosts to 1.84GHz) Intel Cherry Trail X5-Z8300 quad-core processor
  • Intel HD Graphics (Gen8)
  • 4GB DDR3L RAM
  • 64GB storage (split 50GB Windows, 16GB Android)
  • microSD support up to 64GB
  • 10.1in full-HD (1920×1200, WUXGA), 16:9 IPS screen
  • 5Mp rear camera
  • 2Mp front camera
  • 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • OTG
  • USB-C
  • Micro-USB
  • Micro-HDMI
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • AAC Double Speaker
  • optional magnetic keyboard cover
  • 6600mAh non-removable battery with 3A fast-charge tech (charges in 6 hours)
  • 262×167.5×8.8mm
  • 522g

Tim

Note: Don’t you just love getting some new tech stuff?

It Appears That I Have Finally Found a Buyer for MY Asus Z580CA! That Means That Tomorrow I Shall be Ordering a 10 inch Dual-Boot Tablet.

get-ready-to-party
It’s going to be a Dual-Boot Testing Party!

So after several months of folks offering me either an insulting amount for my Asus ZenPad S 8.0 Tablet or merely trying to scam me it appears that the tablet will sell later today.

This of course means that I shall be able to move on to testing a shiny new dual-boot, Win 10/Android 5.1 tablet! That also means I get to run a Linux virtual machine (VM) inside of Windows and have all the power of the notebook that I am currently running this server on as I write this in a 10 inch tablet. Think about that for a second….yeah that is some cool shit stuff!

At the current time, I have pretty much settled on the Chuwi Hibook, but I will do a bit more research before I purchase the new 10 inch class tablet.

Lastly this means that “THE Tablet Test Server” will probably be running on the Dragon Touch X10 again today because my traveling companion shall be the Asus X553SA notebook…yeah the one I am using this evening as a server.

So all that being said and earthlings being as unreliable as they are, stay tuned for updates! I have zero doubt that the person buying this tablet even remotely understands how good this tablet actually is! But I guarantee they will be enormously pleased!
