Just a short note to folks in Western Kentucky who may be interested in the Asus Z580CA I am selling…

Asus Z580CA

Tomorrow is Saturday, 18 June/16, and I shall once again be out and about most of the afternoon, but should you have a real true interest in the Asus Z580CA that I am selling and that the server is actually running on at this very moment, you can contact/meet me in Kuttawa, KY, from 1:30pm-4:30PM. Just send a text to 270-350-5093 and you will get a reply in short order! (scammers need not apply, cash only sale here!) Please read the ads, (see below), that I have posted or do a search for videos on here to get all the specs on this tablet. I don’t tolerate fools well, and have zero tolerance for those who do not understand the specs as explained in the ads and on various posts on this website.

You may choose also to  just drop me an email by visiting the Craigslist ad(s) I have posted and sending an email. Either way, I shall respond.

As an incidental note, the Dragon Touch test server will be powered by my Asus X553SA for tomorrow afternoon, since I will be using the Dragon Touch as a notebook and be carrying the Asus with me in case someone wishes to purchase it.  Note to self 06/18/2016- remember to turn off Windows update, because unlike Linux, Windows has to reboot after every damned little software change!

Update: 06/18/2016-6:33PM CDT: As usual complete disinterest in the Tablet again today. One text message in broken English from a potential scammer, that was it.

The Biggest Difference Between The Dragon Touch X10 and The Asus Z580CA as a Server Platform

asus-z580caPrimarily both the Dragon Touch and Asus tablets deliver pages rather fast, considering they are tablets and have mobile processors and not full notebook/laptop/desktop processors which are obviously more powerful. The biggest difference is  simply the one thing the Asus has that the Dragon Touch does not….

That difference is RAM! 4gb of RAM versus 1gb means that I am actually writing this post on the Asus, using my Bluetooth LogiTech K480 while if I tried to do this on the Dragon Touch while it was the server I would be greeted with a few “application is low on memory” warnings because Chrome was using up a boatload of memory while the server was also using memory.

Sure the faster processor in the Asus helps a lot, but it is the RAM that is the key. Which brings me to my question of the night and that is, why in the hell have I had only one lukewarm offer for the Asus Zenpad S 8.0, also known as a Z580CA? Yeah, I am selling it, because while it is the fastest piece of hardware I own, including my desktop and Asus X553SA notebook, it is a bit small for these old eyes to see as I type out articles such as this one.

I posted on my Tim’s Tablet Web Server site today an article about the new Asus Zenpad Z8 and I am not all that damned impressed by the specs. The cameras on the Z580CA are better, the RAM is double (4gb vs 2gb), and the storage is also double, 32gb vs 64 gb.

I am currently selling the Asus for a mere $185 which is roughly $100 less than ANYPLACE you will find on the Internet. I don’t usually buy a tablet to keep it for a long period of time but rather to test it out, give my viewpoint and then sell it at a very fair price.

If you are looking for a killer tablet that is missing only one thing and that is an upgrade to Android 6.0, which I agree is inexcuseable, then this is still a fantastic tablet!

Why the Dragon Touch X10 is Still a Bargain!

61oSDuBYzgL._SL1000_The Dragon Touch X10 continues to remain one of the best values for a solid basic tablet that money can buy. It does everything well and has no real issues that I am aware of even after abusing it as a server for more than 7 months now. That means it is rarely “off”.

It is more than good enough for basic internet browsing, messaging and even video conferencing. The full size USB port is handy for adding a mouse or plugging in a flash drive.

It also happens to make a nice little notebook when you run the mouse and a Bluetooth keyboard with it. The battery life is outstanding and it is the perfect size for watching movies or TV on.

At $119 on Amazon it still gives all the others a run for the money considering the price. So after owning one for a total of 8 months, I am still recommending it as a best buy!

Things I have learned selling a few Tablets on Craigslist: Or how to spot a scammer on the very first contact…

Trust No One...unless you can look them in the eye.
Trust No One…unless you can look them in the eye.

When you sell items on Craigslist by and large most of the foks will be local and will have searched specifically for the item type that you are selling.

So how do you spot a genuine contact/potential buy from the average scam artist. There are several things that should immediately set off bells and whistles and the occasional warning siren in your head. Here are some of the basics:

  • The person contacting you will refer only to a general product category, such as the text I received today about is my PC still for sale? That set off the whistles and bells immediately. This person didn’t have a clue what I was selling and even asked for the price. Next they immediately agreed to my price while not even reading my text that clearly stated, “No checks, no shipping, no delays, in person, cash only”. They simply went right into their standard scammer drivel about my shipper, blah, blah and I will send a certified (sometimes they say cashiers) check. Conclusion: It’s a scam.
  • If the buyer offers you more than the product is being sold for and mentions a check of any kind, it is a scam. They will tell you that once the check clears their agent will be by to pick it up. Don’t let the conversation go any farther, it’s a scam. After all why not send the person picking up the product the cashier’s check so they can arrive with cash? Yeah, think about it. Scam.
  • Occasionally you will get someone who appears on the up and up for the first few emails or texts, but be prepared for, “oh my aunt died and I must head to a far away place, but I will send you a check and arrange for shipping/or pickup”. Yep, it’s a scam.
  • Almost every legit buyer will try to talk you down in price, that is human nature. If anyone offers more, be prepared for the followup scam. If it sounds even remotely too good, it’s a scam!
  • Updated: 06/16/2016 @ 1916 hrs CDT: I ran across another new scam today. I got a text with a URL from the following phone number: 1-681-260-2625, along with a URL suggesting a trade. That is an Eastern Area code, nowhere near me and this twit sent along a URL, which I did click on, and lo and behold to see what this scammer was trading I would have to enter my Craigslist login/password? Seriously folks, check the damned URL before you login to anything! Conclusion here: scam!

On the other hand if you want to have some fun, take careful note of the area code, which will be someplace which is nowhere near you, then when they offer that cashier’s check, go along for the ride and let them send it. Then run a check on the routing number when you receive it, you can find a URL online to check routing numbers. Take note of the fact that the cashier’s check will be sent from say, Ohio, while the area code of the “buyer” was from New York, or somewhere on the East Coast and yet the bank the check is written on will be Atlanta, or Phoenix.  Just go along with them all they way and enjoy the fact that at the end you get to say “boom!, you lose buddy, the check was fake, but thanks for the entertainment”. Or you can take all your notes and the check to law enforcement if you are really angry.

The bottom line is don’t get scammed, double check everything and make sure to think it all out before doing anything but a cash/in person sale or trade.

The Primary Reason I run this Server is to Test Tablets and Play With WordPress. Today I Did Just That.

1-screenshot-06-12The primary reason this server exists is to test out tablets and also to learn some new stuff in WordPress. After all, if I blow it up I can easily restore it from the backup, no harm no foul.

Today’s project was to figure out how to put ads at the top of the center column (the content of the site if you will) on only the main index page. Ads display within individual articles  and in the sidebars easily, but if someone visits on a smartphone they primarily see only the center section unless they do a lot of scrolling.

So after a few hrs of playing I was able to do just what I needed and find suitable content that will fit the area allocated on a small cell phone.  No the most elegant solution, but not bad for my first attempt.

It certainly is handy to have a tablet server to run tests on.
