My 2 Day Ordeal Figuring Out Remix OS for x86. It does work!

Why yes, it works better on a 10 year old Dell than a new Asus~=!

So I decided to see what all the buzz was about the Remix OS system by trying out the Remix OS for x86 beta. After numerous attempts, I finally resorted to using Rufus 2.9 to create a bootable USB drive that I could run it off of.

I tried using the Installation Tool at first and simply got nowhere, because I don’t have a PC that I am willing to compromise with a beta of an Android system. So my only way out was to install to a USB 3.0 flash drive using my Asus notebook. As I write this the installer is formatting a data partition onto the flash drive. The image below is what I currently am seeing.

Installing? Maybe…

There is no feedback on the screen telling me how things are progressing, but as I understand it this could take 30 plus minutes. Alas the notebook never became a host for the Remix OS in resident mode. However, when using the same USB drive and the files from the Jide Remix project and using a crap USB 2.0 port, I booted up just dandy and am actually writing this post on my Dell Optiplex 745.

Screen shot below is from this machine as I write an article and hustle back to Winders so the other servers I run can be brought back online!

After about 5 Minutes of Searching I have Concluded That This Might Be the Only Web Site Running on a Tablet!

IMG_20160319_132307
A Tablet as a server? You can bet your ass on that!

I did about 10 differently worded searches on Google and my little site here appears to be the only site on the web that runs on a tablet.

Yes I know, it occasionally spends an hour or 3 per month on my notebook, but for the most part, this WordPress server runs almost exclusively on a tablet with it’s very own domain.

Not a big deal, but it is nice to see that I am literally 1 in a billion!

We all know a Win 10 Notebook can run a Server on a Virtual Machine (VM), so….

1-Asus-laptop-sneak-peek-1-300x211As the title states, we all know that a very inexpensive Notebook is easily capable of running a web server, because that is exactly what I am running this site on at this very moment as I write this post!

But since the entire idea of THIS site is to test out tablets as a server and for overall general real-life usage, then someone out there needs to step up and purchase my Asus Tablet! I simply do NOT have the budget to keep buying new tablets at will to test and no one on earth has offered to send me any to test.

So for anyone in my area of the world, all I ask is that you post the link to my craigslist ad and we can only hope someone realizes that they can get a flagship tablet at well over $100 less than retail, with a case/USB C- standard adapter included!

The purchaser of the aforementioned tablet will allow me to purchase a wonderful dual-boot 10 inch class tablet and push it to its extremes, both as a tablet and a server.

Of course if you don’t care, that is ok…poopy happens. After all it is difficult to post/share a link these days.

Another Saturday, Another Report from The Dragon Touch Tablet.

IMG_20160709_124711
The LogiTab

Saturday is the usual day here for the Dragon Touch Report and today is no differrent. This post is being written on the DTX10 (Dragon Touch X10) in LogiTab mode. Meaning of course I am taking advantage of my LogiTech K480  Bluetooth keyboard and wireless mouse.

As usual the tablet continues to be extremely useful in this capacity. However it is getting to be time to move on to another 10 inch class tablet. The tablet server runs equally well on both the DTX10 and my AsusZ580CA but I am eager to begin testing on a Windows 10 device.

That means that eventually I am going to have to pony up about $200 for a killer 10 inch tablet which is why I am hoping that someone will eventually purchase my Asus Tablet, which happens to be the fastest piece of hardware I own, but simply has too small a screen to make it very useful in LogiTab mode.

The 10.6 inch screen on the DTX10 however works just great. So my next tablet will be a 10 in class tablet and that leads me to a few that I am considering.

First on the list is the Chuwi Hibook which is a dual-boot Win10/Android 5.1 device and has 4gb ram and 64gb onboard storage plus microSD card expandability. The display is also decent at 1920 x 1200, IPS. I have a few others in mind also, but for the price the Chuwi seems to be the best deal and has some very decent reviews.

OOPS! One wrong check box shuts down Virtual Machine for 16+ Hrs.

I have no clue how that box got checked.
I have no clue how that box got checked.

So yesterday and today were rather a pain when it came to my servers here. The power went down yesterday for about 4 hrs and that pretty much shut down my primary site for a good part of the afternoon and early evening. Then this morning the router decides to come unplugged from the wall.

Then I get to work only to find that my VM that the primary server runs on has no networking. Once I arrived home I discovered the issue causing the problem which was a check box clicked in the VM adapter settings. How this checkbox got a check in it is well beyond me, but it may have happened when Windows shutdown last night. I am so used to everything running along smoothly that I am not sure if I checked the VM after restarting it.

Of course the Tablet server here chugged along all day just fine, so not everything went to hell in the proverbial handcart.
