Little lessons that we occasionally forget.

downloadSo tonight I decided to upgrade the firmware on my router. All went well except I forgot one or two critical items.

Why yes kiddie, here is what I’ve forgotten…I forgot to screen capture all of my port forwarding settings and reserved IP’s.

Thank goodness I remembered all my IP addresses for all my servers. At least I was able to reserve the IP addresses to the correct Mac address without too much problem.

The lesson here children is to simply screenshot every setting on your router before doing a firmware upgrade!

That is all for tonight,

Tim

A follow up on my article about running a tablet server. How to do port forwarding (Video)

port-forward1So we all know that this site runs on a tablet. The question I hear most is, how do you get the router to send data to the tablet and not your other servers?

The answer of course is a simple thing known as port forwarding. My tablet site sits on port 8080 while all the other sites site are on the more standard port 80. So I need only direct post 8080 to the IP address of whichever tablet I am using as the server at the current time. The change takes a few seconds.

Watch the video, and maybe learn something.

How difficult is it to setup a tablet based server? The answer is, it isn’t!

You don't need a PC!
You don’t need a PC!

If you have a spare tablet sitting around in you house with about 1gb ram, you could be running a nice little server. Programs such as WordPress make it really easy and there are several apps out there for a super reasonable price that will allow you to run a server on either an ARM or Intel based processor.

I use the KSWeb app and it works on both my tablets. In fact I just tested this site on pingdom.com and it scored better than 50% of the websites tested!

You can find lots of good info over at what was originally my tablet server site at tablets.yourfreewordpress.com. I probably posted at least 30 articles on how to set things up and make an HD7 Asus tablet run as a server.

Basically all you need to do is to upload your files to the proper directory and setup your port forwarding to point to the IP of your tablet. It is just that simple.

BLU STUDIO ENERGY 2, BATTERY UPDATE.

Screenshot_2016-04-28-23-46-59No video this time but just a few pics. The battery life on this inexpensive smartphone is still rocking!

The battery is still lasting roughly 3 days minimum. I now use my tablet less than half as often as I used to because my 5 inch smartphone can do it all and the battery lasts darn near forever!

This will probably not be my last post concerning this phone but once more I will say: if you need a decent size phone with a battery that makes the flagship phones look like crap buy one of these!

Yeah I still have almost a day!

I don’t know how you folks are bypassing the registration confirmation but I will be deleting everyone who hasn’t posted shortly!

Time to clear out the dead weight again.
Time to clear out the dead weight again.

I completed cleaned off all the old users a week ago and yet here we are with 20+ non posters again.

I don’t know how you folks are getting around the registration procedure, but suffice to say as soon as I figure it out the users will once again be dumped. There simply is no way to have 9 people register on the site but yet only have one visitor all day long. Therefore I suspect a bot of some sort.

I am sorry if you really intended to post, because if you get deleted then you did not post.
